Teacher education in facilitating the philosophical
community of inquiry is provided by the Philosophy for Children
Association of New Zealand. Basic training consists of a two day
workshop, which consists of an experiential learning component (being
a participant in four communities of inquiry) and several very practical
"how to" sessions. Workshops are suitable for both primary
and secondary school teachers. Student teachers, philosophers, parents
and other interested people are also welcome to attend.
P4CNZ Level One Certification (recognised
by the Federation of Australasian Philosophy for Children Associations
- FAPSA)) requires completion of the two day workshop, followed
by ten documented sessions in the classroom, plus an observation
and feedback by an experienced practitioner.
P4CNZ usually
offers two or three open workshops per year. In-service training
can be arranged, for a minimum of ten teachers. Information about
this year's workshops and trainings can be found in below.
If you would like to enquire about these workshops or about registering
for these workshops, send an email to v.kovach@auckland.ac.nz. Registration information is below.
Unless otherwise
indicated, courses listed take
place in the reading room of the University of Auckland Philosophy
Department, the Fisher Building, Room 211 (2nd Floor, street level),
18 Waterloo Quadrant, Auckland Central. Other locations for
trainings can be arranged on request.
(A Level One Workshop)
(for those with some previous
training and experience)
PROGRAMME
The workshop programme contains a mix of experiential learning and
practical pedagogy. There will be four sessions in which participants
will be involved in a "community of inquiry" in the same
way that their students would be. This serves to model a variety
of processes and to introduce a range of stimulus materials. In
between the communities of inquiry practical pedagogy sessions will
cover the following topics: the nature of the community of inquiry,
the role of the facilitator, questioning techniques for developing
philosophical inquiry, using exercises and discussion plans, keeping
the discussion philosophical, planning and evaluating sessions and
a survey of available resources.
CERTIFICATION
The workshop is designed to equip you to begin philosophical inquiry
in the classroom. Participants who wish to may gain a certificate
as a P4C facilitator, which is recognised throughout
